Shree Panchakumari Samaj: Preserving Faith, Culture, and Community in Sinamangal
Located in Kalimatidole,
Sinamangal, Kathmandu, Shree Panchakumari Temple stands as a spiritual and
cultural landmark for the local community. While the exact origin of the temple
is unknown, it is believed to have been relocated from Gaucharan, the area now
part of Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), during the airport’s expansion
around 2040 B.S. To preserve its sanctity, the temple was carefully moved to
its current site, where it continues to bless devotees and serve as a hub of
faith and community life.
A Temple Reborn
The newly constructed
Panchakumari Temple was inaugurated in 2080 B.S., symbolizing renewal and
devotion. The temple houses beautifully sculpted murtis (idols) of Mata
Panchakumari, Lord Shiva, and Lord Ganesha. At the entrance, a majestic statue
of Lord Hanuman greets devotees, representing protection and strength. Inside,
a dedicated space for Sandhya Aarati welcomes worshippers each evening to offer
prayers and light lamps, preserving the rhythm of daily devotion.
The temple is a vibrant center of
religious celebration. During Dashain, a Durga Murti is installed, worshipped
throughout the festival, and finally taken to the holy river for visarjan. Both
Dashain and Tihar see the temple and surrounding areas illuminated with
decorative lights, creating a festive atmosphere.
On Krishna Janmastami, the Samaj
organizes a Rath Yatra (chariot procession) carrying the idols of Lord Krishna
and Radha, circling Pashupatinath Temple and returning to the Panchakumari
Temple. The procession draws enthusiastic participation from locals,
accompanied by traditional bands, drums, flutes, and chants of “Radhe
Krishna!”. Other festivals such as Holi, Teej, Ekadashi, and Vivah Panchami are
celebrated with music, colors, and devotion, reflecting the temple’s role as a
cultural hub.
Guardians of Tradition – Shree
Panchakumari Samaj
Established five decades ago,
Shree Panchakumari Samaj serves as the custodian of the temple and its
surrounding facilities, ensuring both spiritual and social well-being.
The Samaj oversees several
important facilities in the area:
·
Panchakumari Garden – a serene green space for
locals and visitors to relax and connect with nature.
·
Kriyaputri Bhawan – providing essential support
for traditional funeral and ritual functions.
·
Badminton Covered Hall – promoting physical
activity and youth engagement.
·
Panipadhero – a purified and affordable water
supply system for local residents, a small but impactful social initiative.
·
Nepal Police Booth – a dedicated space for local
security, ensuring safety for visitors and the community.
At the heart of the Samaj’s
activities lies Jyeshtha Nagarik Bhawan, which serves as the main office of the
Samaj as well as a community building. Here, elderly residents gather each
evening to sing bhajans, share stories, and enjoy companionship. The building
has become a place that restores smiles and fosters belonging, especially for
senior members of the community.
Social Contribution and
Community Service
Beyond religious duties, Shree
Panchakumari Samaj plays a key role in social welfare and community
development. Members actively participate in:
a. Waste
management and cleanliness drives around Sinamangal.
b. Mediation
and dispute resolution, helping maintain harmony in the community.
c. Volunteering
at Pashupatinath Temple during major festivals like Teej and Maha Shivaratri.
d. Organizing
social campaigns such as blood donation drives, health checkups, and eye camps,
benefiting residents across the area.
Leadership and Continuity
To ensure effective governance
and community representation, Shree Panchakumari Samaj elects a new president
and executive team every two years from among its active members. This
rotational leadership strengthens inclusivity, transparency, and sustained
involvement of the local population in both religious and social initiatives.
A Legacy of Faith and Service
For over fifty years, Shree
Panchakumari Samaj has embodied the spirit of faith, service, and cultural
preservation. From caring for the temple and organizing vibrant festivals to
providing social support and community services, the Samaj remains a pillar of
spiritual and social life in Sinamangal.
